No room is quite as multifunctional as the kitchen. The heart of the home, this space has evolved from a strictly utilitarian element into a versatile room to prepare food, entertain guests and share meals.
A kitchen renovation is one of the biggest investments a homeowner can make whether your kitchen needs a light refresh or a full renovation. According to luxury custom homebuilder Harwick Homes vice president Shane Klepko, if you are looking to undertake a kitchen remodel, keep in mind a successful kitchen design needs to blend functionality with personal prerequisites. Today, Klepko unveiled before-and-after images and helpful tips about Harwick’s recent luxury kitchen remodel in the prestigious Bonita Bay Golf & Country Club community.
“New part-time Florida residents relocated to Bonita Bay and purchased a one-story single family home built in the mid-90’s with a traditional floor plan featuring a very small and outdated kitchen with original countertops, a shallow sink, unusual sized soffits and little counter space,” explains Klepko. Frequent entertainers, the new homeowners chose Harwick Homes to double the size of the kitchen, improve functionality with modern appliances, textures and finishes, and build their new kitchen into a luxury, light-infused space that is practical and pretty when entertaining family and friends. The remodeled eat-in kitchen also needed to be more accessible to the remainder of the house while still maintaining a separation from the family room.
Key remodeling construction and design challenges included working with odd-sized spaces, a lack of storage, and outdated appliances. Two major obstacles involved keeping a vital structural column in an existing wall and addressing various ceiling heights that made the 20-year old kitchen feel cramped and inefficient.
Harwick developed a custom kitchen remodel design by adding more workable space, a modern large central island, wine storage, and an open flow into the family room. The design team chose to encase the critical column, effectively concealing the structure yet anchoring a newly created entertainment island, resulting in a sleek, clean and modern look and expanded space. Harwick crafted a new dropped cantilevered soffit as a creative solution to tie the varying ceiling heights together and add polish to the modernized kitchen.
Switching the refrigerator to the opposite wall helped create a more efficient space. Sleek appliances were merged with wine storage to fashion a unique wine column encasing the refrigerator and freezer. The new space includes a new faucet with pull-down spout, ceramic sink and under-cabinet lighting bringing a little shine to the remodel. New cabinetry helped maximize storage space, while a waterfall-style island, gas range, and stainless steel hood were added to produce a sleeker-looking kitchen. The new entertainment island ties the kitchen to the rest of the house.
